Recipe Tips For Suet Feeders You can attract a variety of woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, cardinals and wrens by using suet in feeders. There are two types of suet - raw beef fat/rendered suet and pre-made suet cakes. Keep in mind that raw suet will melt and become rancid when the temperature rises above 70 degrees. At this time, you will want to use suet cakes. It is good practice to hang your suet feeders in a location away from little creatures and out of the sun! |

Peanut Butter Fruit Supreme 1/2 cup each flour, cornmeal, sugar and peanut butter 1 cup lard 1 cup of bread crumbs (just crumble 4 or 5 slices of bread, leave out to dry) 1/2 cup of salt free nuts (any kind or mixed) Add a variety of fruit (chopped apple, raisins, figs, dates, apricots, dehydrated blueberries or dehydrated cranberries) Melt the lard and peanut butter over low heat. Add dry ingredients. Mix in fruit and nuts. Pour into cookie sheet or bread pan. Refrigerate until ready to slice. You can freeze slices to keep longer.

Bluebird Suet I like this recipe because you can make as little or as much as you want. In a bowl, mix one part flour to three parts yellow cornmeal. Add spoonfuls of lard (not shortening) and mix with electric mixer until it makes firm balls. Add peanut butter or peanut hearts if you want variety. Press into cookie sheet or an empty suet cake container. Chill then cut into squares to fit your suet feeder. No Lard Suet If you don't like to use lard for suet recipes then try this recipe. 1 cup cornmeal 1 cup chunky or plain peanut butter (store bought or make your own from fresh peanuts and a blender) 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup flour 1 cup water 1 cup birdseed Heat all ingredients but the birdseed in microwave on high for 3-5 minutes or on the stove. Do Not Over Cook. Stir in birdseed and cool. Press into containers. Refrigerate or freeze until ready to use.

Bread Machine Fruit Nut Bran Bread Bake this fruit bread recipe in a bread machine in BAKE LIGHT MODE. When cooled, hollow out the loaf. (Save the bread to add to a different suet recipe.) Melt a suet cake until it is sticky not hot. Mix in a little birdseed then pour into bread cavity. Put in refrigerator to set the suet. Place in a dish for the birds to enjoy. 2 1/2 cups bread flour 1 tablespoon dry milk 1/4 cup bran flakes or raisin bran 1/4 cup dried fruit bits 1 cup water 1 teaspoon dry yeast

Hummingbird Feeder Tips: There is no need to add RED food color to nectar. The birdfeeder itself is usually red. Do not use honey or sugar substitutes! Honey spoils quickly and can be fatal to birds. Sugar substitutes have no nutritional value for our feathered friends. Always clean your feeder thoroughly before adding fresh nectar! Hummingbird Nectar Mix 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. Bring to a low boil, stirring constantly until liquid becomes clear. Let cool before filling hummingbird feeder. Store unused liquid in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Hummingbird Nectar Recipe For Making Large Quantities This recipe is for the avid hummingbird feeder who has many hummingbird stations to fill. This time saving recipe makes a lot of nectar at one time. Mix 1 part water to 1 part sugar. You can make as many batches as you want. Store in the refrigerator until you are ready to use. You must add 3 cups of water to each batch of mixture before you are ready to fill your feeders! Remember, to only store unused nectar for only 4 days in the refrigerator. |
