 Birdfeeder Tips: Feeding hummmingbirds takes a little more care than songbirds. First, hummingbirds feed on nectar and not seed, so make sure you choose a birdfeeder that will hold liquid. Next, you can buy pre-made nectar or you can make your own. Look in our Recipes For Birds for our hummingbird nectar recipe. You should keep any unused nectar in the refrigerator, but only for a few days. Place your birdfeeder so it is not in direct sun. Nectar will spoil on hot days. If the nectar gets cloudy, it can harm the birds. Rule of thumb~empty, rinse and re-fill your birdfeeder every other day. If you are lucky, your hummingbirds will empty the birdfeeder for you by the end of the day! Nectar Protectors are great for keeping ants out of your nectar feeders!
